Micro-Needling or Derma Roller

The idea behind microneedling is that you create micro-wounds in the skin with needles attached to a roller device. This, in turn, supposedly stimulates the growth of collagen. There are microneedling treatments you can get at Medical Spas or you can buy a Derma Roller and do it yourself at home.

Normally a salon treatment for the facial area will use a needle depth of between 1 mm and 2mm, with needles over 2mm usually reserved for the body or for areas affected by deep scarring.

I give this treatment a thumbs down when it comes to anti-aging and skin tightening. I had several treatments and they did nothing. Also, I’m not sold on the idea of using it for the face. It’s one thing to stimulate collagen with IPL or lasers, and quite another to shred your skin all over with tiny knives. I don’t see how that is going to be good for your skin in the long run.

What I did find microneedling worked well for was treating scars. It reduced the redness, thickness and size of scars, no matter how old they were.
